CNAME requests return 404, while same request to *.onrender.com returns 200

I’m using Cloudflare as a nameserver, and I have a CNAME pointing to onrender.com

When a request is sent via the CNAME (no Cloudflare proxying, DNS only), I get a 404.

When that same request is sent directly to the onrender.com domain, I get a 200.

The custom domain is verified by Render and a SSL certificate is issued.
