I am new to render, looking to post hugo sites.
I want to limit access to the sites with password.
can I use .htacess and .htpasswd with render?

We don’t currently have any built-in support for authentication with static sites at this time. However, we are planning to improve the feature set of our static site offering in the near future, so I encourage you to submit a feature request at https://feedback.render.com/ with your use case.
Hello. It’s been over a year since this reply. Is this still the case? I can’t find any documentation indicating that .htaccess (or other mechanism) is available to use. Just wondering. Thank you.

This is still something that we don’t support natively yet. You can upvote the feature request to be notified of updates on the status https://feedback.render.com/features/p/access-protection-for-static-sites
We do have a workaround with Pagecrypt that has been discussed in our blog: https://render.com/blog/static-site-auth-pagecrypt
